Savannah College of Art and Design Library
The Savannah College of Art and Design’s (SCAD’s) crown jewel for visual discovery and research is the Jen Library, located on historic Broughton Street. Nestled in the heart of downtown Savannah, Georgia, the Jen Library is a 85,000 square foot Art Deco-style building, acquired by the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1996. Renowned across the community as an architectural marvel, the former department store turned SCAD Library features large windows providing natural light to the entire space and a gorgeous glass staircase.
Reasons to Visit the SCAD Library
The Savannah College of Art and Design’s library contains nearly 300,000 physical and electronic publications accessible across all SCAD campus locations. Among the incredible volumes for research and reference, literary works, and periodicals, the SCAD library’s collection also includes 2,100 works in book form by artists active from 1960 through the contemporary era. The library unquestionably holds one of the most significant collections of artists’ books in the entire United States.
SCAD Library History
The former department store turned resource center opened as the Savannah College of Art and Design’s main library in 1999. It was renamed in honor of its primary benefactors, Lancy and Jim Jen. The American Library Association and the International Interior Design Association honored the Jen Library with a “Library Interior Design Award” for its excellence in design, creativity, and functionality.
Collections
The SCAD library is a hub for any creative with a thirst for knowledge. Thousands of creatives visit the Jen Library in search of new inspiration and skill refinement. The Don Bluth Collection of Animation is one of the most prominent collections in the SCAD library, allowing students to explore animation drawings and storyboards. Materials from some of the artist’s most admired work in film, including The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, Anastasia, and Titan A.E., are also featured.
Visitor Information
The iconic SCAD Library is located at 201 E. Broughton St. Tours are offered twice daily Monday–Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. unless otherwise stated on their registration web page.
