 From its very beginning, locals and visitors to Savannah have flocked to Forsyth Park for its unique blend of natural beauty, history and attractions. It’s the largest and oldest park in Savannah, spanning 30-acres and is where adults, youth, families and people of all ages come to see the sights, run, play and relax. Often the setting for football and Frisbee games, skateboarders, walkers and joggers also love the gorgeous ambiance of Forsyth Park. For those with an interest in History, Forsyth has more than its share. It was created in 1851, named for Georgia Governor, John Forsyth. Several monuments that pay tribute to soldiers who fought in the Confederate and Spanish-American Wars are also in the park. The Civil War monument is in the center, to commemorate the sacrifices of those killed in the Civil War.  The famous Forsyth Fountain was added to the park in 1858 and is a focal point of the park because of its size, majestic elegance and beauty. In another corner of Forsyth, a special garden called the Fragrant Garden for the Blind is a unique project of Savannah garden clubs and a spot of interest to all who visit. Outdoor plays and concerts often take place here and at the northwest corner of the park, in Hodgson Hall, a 19th-century Italianate Greek-revival building, you'll find the Georgia Historical Society, which displays a collection of historic artifacts and manuscripts.  The park's perimeter is one of the prettiest walks in the city, and gives you a wonderful opportunity to stroll through the Victorian District and see the marvelously restored homes. |
